Language Acquisition in Uruguayan Schools

As a Spanish as a foreign language teacher here in the US I was very curious about language acquisition and development in Uruguay. I found that schools in Uruguay employ various strategies and programs to teach language acquisition, emphasizing both native and foreign languages.


Here are some key approaches I noticed related to learning English specifically during my 2 weeks there:


  1. Early Language Introduction: Language learning begins early in primary education, with Spanish as the primary language and English introduced as a second language. For example, many schools start teaching English from kindergarten (and some as early as 2 years old), using interactive methods such as songs, games, and storytelling to engage young learners and build a strong foundation.

  2. Immersion Programs: Some schools offer bilingual or immersion programs where subjects like math and science are taught in English. This approach helps students use the language in more practical contexts, enhancing their fluency and comprehension. A science class might be conducted entirely in English, allowing students to learn scientific concepts while simultaneously improving their language skills. While we have some immersion schools in our neighboring communities, I really hope some day we can in Lowell too.

  3. Technology Integration: Uruguay's Plan Ceibal, a nationwide initiative that provides laptops and internet access to students, supports language learning through digital resources. Online platforms and apps offer interactive exercises, videos, and games that make language learning more engaging. Students use apps like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone to practice vocabulary and grammar. There is also something called "Ingles sin Limites" (English without limits), an online program which allows students anywhere in the country to have access to English learning even if their teacher knows no English.

  4. Qualified Language Teachers: Schools seem to prioritize hiring teachers who are proficient in both the language they teach and effective language acquisition methodologies. Continuous professional development ensures that teachers stay updated with the latest language teaching techniques. Teachers might attend workshops on the communicative approach, which emphasizes interaction and practical communication skills over rote memorization.

  5. Cultural Exposure: Schools incorporate cultural aspects into language learning to make it more meaningful and engaging. Activities such as celebrating international holidays, hosting foreign exchange students, and organizing language-themed events help students understand the cultural context of the languages they are learning. During International Week, students might participate in activities related to English-speaking countries, such as cooking traditional dishes or performing English-language plays.

  6. Extracurricular Activities: Language clubs, conversation groups, and language competitions provide additional opportunities for students to practice and enhance their language skills outside the classroom. For instance, an English club might organize debate sessions or movie nights to encourage students to use English in a fun and informal setting. I love the idea of starting a language club in Lowell, meeting at a local coffee shop and speaking only in Spanish sounds fun!

  7. Assessment and Feedback: Regular assessments and personalized feedback help track students' progress and identify areas for improvement. Teachers use various assessment methods, including oral exams, written tests, and interactive activities, to gauge students' language proficiency. Students participate in oral presentations or write essays in their target language, receiving constructive feedback to help them improve.

  8. Several Languages are Taught: The primary focus is on Spanish and English, but other languages are also offered to cater to diverse interests and cultural connections. Here are some languages commonly taught in Uruguay: These languages are taught in various settings, including public and private schools, language institutes, and cultural centers, providing students with diverse language learning opportunities.

  9. Spanish: The official language and primary language of instruction in schools.

  10. English: Widely taught as a second language from an early age in primary and secondary schools.

  11. Portuguese: Important due to Uruguay's proximity to Brazil and economic ties.

  12. Italian: Reflecting the significant Italian heritage and influence in Uruguay.

  13. French: Offered in many schools as an additional foreign language option.

  14. German: Taught in some schools, particularly where there is a German-speaking community or cultural influence.

  15. Chinese (Mandarin): Increasingly offered due to the growing global importance of China.

  16. Japanese: Available in some specialized language schools and cultural institutions.

  17. Hebrew: Taught in Jewish schools and cultural centers.

  18. Russian: Available in some specialized language programs and cultural institutions.

  19. Korean: Taught in some language schools and cultural institutions due to growing cultural interest.

  20. Arabic: Available in cultural centers and specialized language schools.

  21. Guarani: An indigenous language taught in some institutions focused on indigenous culture and languages.

  22. Armenian: The Armenian community in Uruguay has established schools and cultural centers that offer Armenian language education. These institutions aim to preserve the Armenian heritage and language among the descendants of Armenian immigrants.



Through these methods, schools in Uruguay create a comprehensive and immersive language learning environment that helps students acquire both native and foreign languages effectively.


Other cool findings:


  • They focus on the communicative approach and collaborate with Cambridge to help students pass their tests.

  • English language teaching textbooks were developed by Uruguayan teachers and the US Embassy. The teachers!

  • They have created a series for K-12 students and adults.

  • The textbooks follow the principle that "there are no bad Englishes," incorporating various accents, including native speakers and those with Uruguayan accents.

  • The idea is that speaking with an accent does not invalidate the way one speaks the language.

  • English is mandatory starting in Kindergarten, with 10 main languages taught throughout Uruguay.

  • Portuguese is mandatory in every elementary school near the Brazilian border.

  • 20 schools in the country teach Italian, reflecting the significant Italian immigration to Uruguay.

  • With so much happening with AI these days I often wonder if my job will somehow become obsolete. I was reminded that to learn a language you absolutely need interaction and it must be synchronous. While aspects of AI will help develop new material for students with significantly less time, language is alive and that will be very hard for AI to ever get right.
